Gonçalo Pinto Ferreira, partner and head of the Labour and Social Security practice at TELLES, in a comment to Jornal de Negócios, when asked about the possible increase of collective redundancies and layoffs as a result of the international trade war context, states that “there is no clear and unequivocal answer [to the question asked]”. “It will depend on many factors, not least the response that the EU and Portugal can give to the fight against unemployment," he stressed.
The TELLES’ lawyer, who is specialised in labour law, points out that “in a global market, the domino effect that an increase in tariffs could have on the economy, affecting other sectors, cannot be ruled out”. The lawyer mentions the case of suppliers and distributors who "don't even export to the US, but who paradoxically could be even more vulnerable because they are less prepared, less able to innovate and have less access to alternatives on the market". And in these cases, he worries, “collective redundancies may even be an inevitable recourse for the future viability of the company”.
