Ivone Rocha, partner and coordinator of the Energy & Natural Resources practice, Luísa Vilas Boas and Bernardo Gomes da Conceição, associates in the same practice, sign the opinion piece "Portugal's Commitment to Renewable Gases", recently published in Legal Industry Reviews Portugal.
The TELLES's lawyers discuss Portugal's commitment to renewable gases and highlight some of the latest developments in the sector. They briefly address the applicable legal frameworks and the potential uses and benefits of incorporating and expanding the use of renewable gases.
Ivone Rocha, Luísa Vilas Boas and Bernardo Gomes da Conceição also highlight the recent launch of a competitive process for the centralised purchase of renewable gases, including both green hydrogen and biomethane, clarifying its requirements and how it will proceed: "[...] The purchase will follow an electronic auction, with a base price of 62€/MWh for biomethane and 127€/MWh for hydrogen produced by electrolysis of water using electricity from renewable energy sources. The contracts signed will be valid for a period of ten years [...]".
Finally, they recall that this commitment to renewable gases is supported by the National Hydrogen Plan and the Biogas Action Plan, which provide for two distinct implementation phases based on a common complementary axis of social and environmental sustainability: "[...] on the one hand, promoting the creation of a national biomethane market and the centralised purchase of renewable gases, and, on the other hand, supporting production [...]".
