José Miguel Albuquerque, Senior Associate in TELLES Sports Law Practice, has been elected President of the Portuguese Sports Law Association for the triennium 2024/2026.
"It is a great honour to preside over an association that has grown so much in recent years. But it's an even greater responsibility to continue the work that has been done and to try to actively contribute to responding to the many challenges and changes that national sport will face in the coming years. We want to ensure the relevance of the APDD in the forthcoming reforms and to involve our members as much as possible in the debate in order to enrich the APDD's contributions," stresses the sports law expert lawyer at TELLES.
With a remarkable track record in the sports sector, José Miguel Albuquerque has been involved in arbitration cases before the TAD and TAS, disciplinary cases before the Portuguese Football Federation and FIFA, as well as all player recruitment, renewal and permanent or temporary transfer processes.
His extensive experience in the sports sector also includes advising on financial transactions and operations in the areas of corporate finance, banking, corporate governance and capital markets, as well as drafting and negotiating sponsorship and partnership agreements that have a significant impact on the activities of football clubs.
He completed the curricular part of the Scientific Master's Degree in Legal, Labour and Corporate Sciences and holds three postgraduate degrees (Sports Law and Finance from the Law Faculty of the University of Lisbon; Commercial and Public Company Law from the Law Faculty of the Catholic University; "The Lausanne Sports Arbitration Tribunal (TAS) - Legal Introduction to its Operation" from the Rey Juan Carlos University - Institute of Public Law) and recently completed the first edition of the FIFA Executive Programme in Football Agency.
The Portuguese Sports Law Association (APDD) was founded in 1998 with the aim of promoting and disseminating sports law, in particular through the design and development of training courses, the organisation of symposia, debates and other means of bringing together lawyers dedicated to the study and development of sports law, as well as the writing and publication of sports law texts. The APDD currently has more than 350 members, is a member of the National Sports Council and an associate of the Portuguese Olympic Committee and the Portuguese Paralympic Committee, and is regularly consulted in the main processes of drafting and revising legislation in national sports.
