In this chapter on Portugal, TELLES' team of lawyers analyze the country's energy market and how it is positioning towards the objectives established in the National Energy and Climate Plan (PNEC 2030). Among the main objectives of PNEC are the contribution for the decarbonization of the Portuguese economy and accomplishment of the targets set for energy efficiency.
“The Portuguese energy market is mature, with a mix in which green energies have been gaining a significant and exponential presence. The main challenges in the energy market relate to projects involving hydrogen, the completion of the liberalisation of the electricity and gas industries, extended until late 2025. (…) In the coming years, hydrogen and lithium are expected to play a major role in Portugal. The long-awaited licensing tender for prospection rights for lithium is expected to be launched in the near future. Green hydrogen will, over time, allow Portugal to transform its energy paradigm completely and become a net energy exporter...”, can be read in the chapter.
